Empowering the Next Generation:
Education in South Sudan
Education is the most powerful tool for transformation. In South Sudan, a nation with
some of the world’s most challenging education indicators, the Brother Deng
Foundation is working to ensure that a child’s birthplace does not determine their
destiny. We believe that every young person in the Tiitchok Mareng area deserves the
chance to become an educated, well-rounded leader.
The Reality on the Ground
South Sudan faces a critical education crisis. In villages like Tiitchok Mareng, located in
Aweil East, the obstacles to learning are immense:
Lack of Infrastructure
Only 26% of villages have functioning primary schools, and there are currently no secondary schools in the Tiitchok Mareng area.
Overcrowded Classrooms
The average student-to-teacher ratio is 100:1.
Scarce Resources
There is only one English and Math textbook for every four students.
Gender Disparity
Only 25% of students are women and girls. Tragically, a young girl in South Sudan is 3x more likely to die in childbirth than to reach Grade 8.
Our Impact to Date
Despite these challenges, we are creating a pathway to success for thousands of students. By removing financial barriers to education, we keep dreams alive.
-
3,200+ students provided with school uniforms and essential supplies.
-
7 graduates supported through full tuition scholarships.
-
3 college graduates supported, creating new professionals for the community.
The Future: Building for Tomorrow
We are moving beyond tuition assistance to create a sustainable educational ecosystem in Northern Bahr El Ghazal.
1 | The Tiitchok Mareng Primary School Project
Our vision is to move students out from under trees and tents into permanent, safe, and equipped classrooms. We are fundraising to build a center of excellence that provides:
● Standardized classrooms to lower the student-teacher ratio.
● Dedicated spaces for female students to encourage enrollment and retention.
● A library stocked with a 1:1 textbook ratio.
2| Secondary School Expansion
Currently, when a student finishes primary school in our village, their journey often ends because there is no local high school. We are planning the region’s first secondary school initiative to ensure that the “Cattle Boys” and girls of today become the doctors and engineers of tomorrow.
To solve the 100:1 ratio, we must invest in people. Our future plans include a teacher-certification fund to train local residents, providing them with stable jobs while uplifting the entire community’s literacy rates.
