Clean Water: The Foundation of Life and Dignity
Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental human right. In Aweil, South Sudan, the distance to a water source can be the distance between health and illness, or between an education and a life of labor. The Brother Deng Foundation is committed to closing that gap.
The Vital need for WASH
In regions like Aweil, South Sudan, the absence of safe water and adequate sanitation creates a devastating cycle of poverty and illness.
-
Unsafe water is a major cause of waterborne illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and diarrhea, the latter being a leading cause of death and stunting among children in the region.
-
Nearly 35% of children in the region suffer from stunted growth, a condition directly linked to poor sanitation and the resulting inability to absorb nutrients.
-
Without local facilities, women and girls must often travel long distances to fetch water or find private areas, increasing their vulnerability to gender-based violence. Nearby access restores their safety and dignity.
-
When water is accessible locally, the time children, especially girls, previously spent fetching water is returned to them, allowing for increased school attendance and empowerment.
Our Impact: The Water Well
Our first major infrastructure project, the water well in Macher Geng Village, is already transforming daily life.
Daily Usage
2,000 people utilize the water well every single day.
Community Reach
8,000 people now have consistent access to clean, safe drinking water.
Well Status
Providing a reliable, life-saving resource that serves as a cornerstone for
community health.
Our Future Goal: Sustainable Development
Clean water is the first step toward a fuller, more hopeful life. Our goal is to expand this infrastructure to every village in the Tiitchok Mareng area to permanently break the cycle of poverty.
Scaling Our Reach
We are striving to fund and install additional wells to ensure that no mother
has to choose between a long, dangerous trek or giving her child contaminated water. Every new well is built to be complete, operational, and sustainable for the community it serves.
Join us in making a difference
